Hickory Grove Rural School Museum

Don Williams Recreation Area (North of Ogden, IA)

Constructed in 1889, this one room school served the residents of Yell Township in Boone County until 1956. The building was moved to its present site at Don Williams Recreation Area in 1964 and restored in 1972.

Highlights of the Museum:

  • -Original double desks, stage curtain, pot bellied stove, angle lamps, and pump organ.
  • -Early text books, documents, and photographs of rural schools in Boone County.
  • -Authentic teachers' and children's costumes

Hours:

  • Open June through August
  • 1:30 to 4:00 pm, 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month

Directions:

From Boone, take Highway 30 West to Ogden turn Right (North) on P70 through Ogden and follow 5 miles north with Don Williams Recreation on the right. Take the second entrance to reach the school.
